[ Home ] [ About Us ] [ Services ] [ Funeral Plan ] [ Contact ] F H Halliday & Son Limited A brief history of the Halliday Family. In the 1800’s the Halliday Family were carpenters, general house maintenance, painters and decorators employing 8 people based at our current address in the High Street. One day someone came into the woodworking shop and asked if it was possible for us to make a coffin and it was from that time that they started to become Funeral Directors. If you look back in history of the older family funeral directors in this country you will note that they started out from just being Carpenters. Our
records show that from 1880 they started carrying out full
funeral services providing horse drawn hearses and horse
drawn mourning coaches and all the provisions that you
would expect from a Funeral Director. The
business was founded by Frederick Halliday and passed to
his son William (Bill) and in the late 1950’s his nephew
Edward (Eddie) Lawrence came to join him in his business
with his wife Kitty Lawrence. Eddie worked in the Carpentry
workshop and Kitty ran the office and decorating business.
Eddie’s Son Glyn joined the company after leaving school
at the age of 17 and also joined Eddie working in the
Carpentry workshop and learnt all aspects of the trade from
decorating to carpentry to bearing then to become a Funeral
Director. Today
the Company is owned by Glyn Lawrence and his wife Helen
and is accompanied by their General Manager, Matthew
Aldridge and his team. Our Company is an Independent Family Business and our aim has always been to give the best service and help to families at such a difficult time. At Halliday’s we hold traditional values, whilst realising the importance of choice and have a modern view about Funeral Services.
